Maija James

DESIGNER Q&A

Where did you receive training? Do you have any degrees or certifications in this field?
Initially, I benefited from an extensive training program in furniture at May Company here in Eugene, Oregon. As the furniture Department Manager, I completed courses in Interior Design and Decorating and received my certificate as an interior decorator from Harcourt of Pennsylvania.

Where do you gather inspiration?
I am always inspired by nature, colors, textures, and an organic atmosphere. The challenge of coordinating a client's vision gives me the most satisfaction creating a space that fulfills their dreams.

What do you love most about designing?
I like assembling the many parts of the design to achieve a cohesive environment with the tastes and desires of the clients always in mind.

What has been your favorite project to date?
There has been so many, but the one that stands out is when I worked my first "Tour of Homes" and had the opportunity to match my interiors with the designs of the architects'. This was really a top-down project for me. Paint, tile, countertops, flooring, bathrooms, fixtures, and furniture.

What are your favorite brands/materials to work with?
Well, Stickley is a favorite, because of their fine workmanship and quality materials. I also like its timeless designs.

What makes Paul Schatz special? Why should people come here for their furnishings?
The foundation of any good business is their people, and Paul Schatz has a terrific reputation for having excellent customer service. This is backed up with some of the finest furniture brands in the industry making quality the cornerstone of selling our product. What makes us special is we are selling a future not a quick fix.
